How do I pray for my husband?

Praying is one of the most effective things that the wife of a pastor can do for her husband. The spiritual battle that occurs in ministry is real and it is gruesome. When our men wake up every morning they dawn their spiritual armor in preparation for war. When they arrive at the office they devise a plan for the next defense. When they stand at the pulpit they declare the marching orders of King Jesus. We, as pastor’s wives, have the privilege to cover our husbands with prayer as they enter each battle and then attend to their wounds with intercession as they return.

But how do we pray the Lord’s will for our husbands? What do we ask of him? The simplest way to pray for our husbands and our ministry is to use the scriptures. By praying scripture we use the inherent word of God to proclaim these truths in our spouses lives.

The following prayers can be used to aid our men as they enter the battlefield:

Lord, make him worthy of the calling
“I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love.” Ephesians 4:1-2

Lord, help him to boldly proclaim the gospel
“Proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness and without hindrance.” Acts 28:31

Lord, protect him from the evil one
“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8

Lord, help him be full of integrity
The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.” Proverbs 11:3

Lord, do not let him give in to temptation
“God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”
1 Corinthians 10:13

Lord, make him wise
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” James 1:5

Lord, help him not fear his fellow man
The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” Psalm 118:6

Lord, surround him with godly men
“Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” Proverbs 13:20

Lord, let him find his worth in you alone
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.  Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.” Matthew 10:29-31

Lord, make him a strong leader
“But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves.” Luke 22:26

Lord, help him to be humble
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8

When we pray for our husbands we declare that we rely on God to sustain us and our ministries. We also proclaim that the Lord is in control and that he responds to the requests of his people. What an amazing gift to approach the throne of God with the confidence that he will generously provide these things!
